Hawkins STEM:
Our Guiding Light

The Mission of the Guy R. Hawkins Center for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics is to Build Bridges:

Linking People with STEM

Linking People Interested in STEM

Linking People Curious About STEM

Linking STEM to Communities and Communities to STEM

The "Why"
of
Hawkins STEM

The "Now"

Today, now, there is currently a tremendous need for STEM professionals. This real demand can only be expected to increase. We can't wait for a child in elementary school to grow up, and enter STEM. We must interest people today, unaquanted with STEM to take an interest.

"Hidden Einsteins"

"Hidden Einsteins." The idea, concept, no doubt fact, that there are many, many, people, across America, who could improve America, and the America Economy with their inventions were they to be introduced to other inventors, and the invention process. If true, then what about introducing people to STEM? Introducing people to STEM, introducing STEM concepts STEM, introducing STEM opportunities, these are the goals of the Hawkins Center for STEM.

"Changing the Conversation"

Look at the News. It's time to change the conversation. On the one hand we need to talk about growing the STEM population. On the other hand, we need to grow "STEM Literacy" urgently, and over a huge population,

OUR STORY

Hawkins STEM

Hawkins STEM is named for an Afirican-American Biochemist, Guy Hawkins. Formerly of the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, MD, Guy Hawkins was a Veteran of the US Army, a Graduate of Howard University, member of the American Legion, member of the Gideons, and much, muxh more!

The Vision

Guy Hawkins was dedicatied to the proposition that everyone can be involved in STEM. From his education and from his professional work, he saw, firsthand, all kinds of people, learning STEM, teaching STEM, coalessing around STEM, and building futures through STEM.

Projects

* Exploring STEM

* Connect People via STEM

* Conduct STEM Events

* Support STEM Interest

* Share STEM Stories

* Build STEM Comminities

Non-Profit

The Hawkins Center for STEM is Incorproated as a Non-Profit Organization. We will bridge the gap that exists between Communities and STEM. The Hawkins Center will therefore link individuals and groups

Currently in Development

Science

At the Hawkins Center for STEM, we'll work together to explore the "Hard Sciences."

True, "Hard Science" is slang, but it's slang that's been with us since 1858 and found in "The Journal of the Society of Arts." The term traditionally refers to General Science, Astronomy, Geology, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Agriculture, Astrophysics, Meteorology, Agronomy, etc.

Technology

Technology uses an understanding of science to achieve goals. In other words, Technology uses a knowledge of science, an understanding of science, to make things of use. So, if you understand science, you can use what you know to make things. Make things for yourself. Make thinks for others. But most importantly, make things that work...the first time!  This is another reason Hawkins STEM will gather people together, into organized teams, and give them projects in which we, together, can make things that work, and at the same time, build confidence in our abilities to build things.

Engineering

Engineering! Some people, especially in undergrad, hear the word, "Engineering." and they are immediately stricken with fear and loathing!  Some feel there is no way they could be an engineer...or do engineering! True. Back in the early part of the 20th Century, Engineers were referred to as, "Men of Genius!" Thinking this made sense. Think about Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Lewis Latimer, and Nicola Tesla, to name a few! But think of this! Suppose two of the  key assets an engineer must have is imagination and vision?

Join us in Hawkins STEM and let's find out together!

Math

Some people fear Math. Maybe it's a lack of knowing the basics. Maybe it's perception issue, i.e., having heard so many times, from so many people, that "Math is Hard." It could very well come down to lack of practice. Whatever. Don't fear Math. Respect Math, but don't fear it.

But if you do have, or have had, "Unfortunate Math Experiences" reach out to Hawkins STEM. We'll be putting together teams of people to work on "Math (Based) Projects. You may find this will be of great help to you understanding of Mathematics.
